In Germany, he worked for a merchant in Kulmbach ) Culmbach ?) named Johann Friedrich Gummi who was also the mayor of the town. His brother Georg also went to work there after an accident in which he fractured his skull on the ice at age 14, which caused him to abandon his studies.

Came to US a year after parents and siblings (or by another account in 1841 - permission to emigrate granted 22 July 1841). Went to Burlington and then on west to Omaha, Nebraska. But his son Hugo consistently says he was born in Ohio in 1840.
