Notes for Mary Anderson
“Mamie and her sisters; Atilla “Sissie”, Bessie, and Annie; grew up in Austin. At the time of the wedding, Mary’s mother, a widow, was married to Judge Alexander W. Terrell and her sister married Louis Hancock who became mayor of Austin.
In July 1893, Walter and Mary traveled to Europe and to Turkey where Mary’s (step)father was US Minister to Turkey. Walter served as private secretary to Terrell while he was in Turkey. The four-month visit to Constantinople gave Walter and Mary a close up view on the Armenian revolution in Turkey and he publicly defended his father-in- law when Minister Terrell came under attack.”

“She spent many summers at the Athenaeum Hotel in Chautauqua, New York.”

“If you noticed the Walter Bremond house, on the opposite corner of the block to the John Bremond house, not so elegant and close to the street (San Antonio St. still, I think), that was the wedding gift to my grandparents, Walter and Mamie, and where my grandmother spent her entire life, and where I visited often with my mother as a child. “
