1879 July Oswego Daily Times " Messrs. Hermon and Rudolph Matz, of Chicago, Ill, students at Williams College, are for a few days the guests of their uncle, S. T. Gates.  The grandfather of these promising young men, Mr. Hiram Lewis, was at one time well and favorably known in this village, where he resided  for many years and will be remembered by a great many of the older inhabitants as the proprietor for some years of the old stage line between this place and Syracuse.

Aug 24, 1894 in Oswego Daily Times "Sewel T. Gates.  Pulaski, Aug 21-- Died, at his home in Pulaski, NY, August 21, Sewel T. Gates, aged 78 years and 11 months.  Funeral from his late residence Thursday at 2PM.  Interment in South Richland Cemetery.  Mr. Gates was a man well and favorably known and few men are known to possess such qualities of sterling integrity and straightforward honesty of purpose.  He was a man whose judgement was sought in matters of business, real estate and general finance.  He was born in the town of Winfield, Herkimer county, September 22, 1815 and removed to the town of Richland, Oswego county, with his parents at the age of 14, where he has since resided.  He was a prosperous farmer, but retired and moved into the village of Pulaski in 1861.  He served his town as supervisor three terms.  A considerable part of that time being in the stirring times of the rebellion, at which time he took a special interest and was particularly active in the recruiting of troops and filling the quotas of the town.  The last years of his life were passed in a quiet manner.  On March 10th of the present year he fell and broke his left arm near the shoulder and has been a most constant sufferer since that time, through that and other complications."
