Notes for William Craige
“Many of the Scotch, who were almost exclusively Presbyterians, first fled to Holland and thence to Ireland, where they remained a number of years, when, by fresh oppressions they were driven to seek religious liberty in another clime; and, coming directly from Ireland to this country, they were called "Scotch-Irish....I am almost certain the Craigs, Blackwoods and Kirklands and perhaps the Freelands, came across the Atlantic in the same vessel, for they seem to have been connected by relationship in the old country, and did not separate after landing in America until they were settled. Where they landed, I have no means of knowing but it is certain they located for a time in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania at this time was sorely tried by the French and Indian wars, and it was chiefly on account of hostile Indians that they fled to North Carolina. They finally reached North Carolina where they settled in the Hawfields and remained several years -- until about 1750 or a little later. The oldest purchase in the vicinity of New Hope church was made by William Craige who settled, lived and died about two or three miles west of the church, on the south bank of New Hope stream. The date of his death is unknown, but he lived to be a very old man, and his body lies buried, together with the body of his wife, in the old Hawfields burying ground. This sacred spot of earth, where scores of the old settlers lie buried, has recently been plowed up and cultivated in corn, and the stones which marked many a grave have been rudely torn down and scattered over the fields. The perpetrator of this deed was Addison Wilson, who has recently (1891) been indicted in the courts and it is to be hoped will receive just punishment for such an outrage against humanity.”

Fred Craig, a descendant:
“The Craig odyssey to the American South was begun by William Craig who was born in Scotland in 1698, during the reign of William and Mary. Nine years before the Act of Union between England and Scotland, William Craig and his wife, Margaret Logan Long Craig, had a son, born in 1733, named David Craig. David Craig became known in the family lineage as "David Craig. Sr."
In 1740, the thirteenth year of the reign, of King George II, no friend of the Scots, William and Margaret Craig, together with their
seven year old son, David, crossed the Atlantic and settled briefly in Pennsylvania before moving to Orange County, North Carolina.“
