Notes for Madeline Thompson
Of Manhasset, Long Island, New York when she was her sister’s matron of honor in 1943.
26 Banberry Lane, Chapel Hill, NC
“Madeline Thompson Patterson of Chapel Hill lived a long productive life of 98 years. Madeline was born in Chapel Hill on August 21, 1912 and spent her childhood on Henderson Street in Chapel Hill. She attended the University United Methodist Church in which her parents, Brodie and Lovie Thompson, were active. Madeline and her husband, Pat, rejoined the University United Methodist Church on returning to Chapel Hill in 1969, and she continued as an active member until her death.
Madeline graduated from Chapel Hill High School and attended Salem College in Winston Salem. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in history.
While at Salem, she was introduced to Henry N. (Pat) Patterson, UNC Class of 1931. They were later married at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City in September, 1933. Madeline and Pat lived in Manhasset, New York for 30 years until 1969. They then returned to Chapel Hill. Madeline was exceedingly active and served for many years in leadership positions in the Congregational Church of Manhasset.
Madeline and Pat were ardent supporters of the UNC General Alumni Association, in New York, and later when they returned to Chapel Hill. While in New York, Madeline began a life long involvement with the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic organization supportive of education for women. She was an active member over a span of more than 50 years.
Pat, Madeline’s husband, predeceased her in 1977. Madeline is survived by her three sons, Hank Patterson of Chapel Hill, Stewart Patterson of Fearrington, William Patterson of Orange Park, Florida; and four grandsons, Henry (Pat) Patterson of Chapel Hill, Braxton Patterson of Asheville, Stewart Patterson II of Raleigh, and Chandler Patterson of Arlington, Virginia. She is survived by two great grandchildren, Riley Patterson and Meredith Patterson of Chapel Hill. Madeline always treated her sons’ and grandsons’ spouses with the same love she gave her sons, Jane Smith Patterson, Sallye Patterson, Jeanie Patterson (now deceased); and granddaughters-in- law, Jennifer Patterson and Sara Patterson.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. A private burial will be held in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers gifts in memory of Madeline Patterson be made to the University United Methodist Church, 150 East Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 or to the UNC General Alumni Association, P.O. Box 660, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff of Carolina Meadows Health Center for their wonderful care during Madeline’s last few years.”
