Stayed in Circeville, Ohio longer than rest of family, going to join brother George in Farmington, Iowa in 1843, and moving to Burlington in 1853.

Worked at J. S. Schramm in 1850s until he started his own business.

“For a time in the 1850s, J. S. Schramm's brother Charles F. was associated with the business until forming the clothing manufacturing firm of Schramm & Schmieg in 1868.”

First 2 wives and many children died of tuberculosis.
