1879 July Oswego Daily Times " Messrs. Hermon and Rudolph Matz, of Chicago, Ill, students at Williams College, are for a few days the guests of their uncle, S. T. Gates.  The grandfather of these promising young men, Mr. Hiram Lewis, was at one time well and favorably known in this village, where he resided  for many years and will be remembered by a great many of the older inhabitants as the proprietor for some years of the old stage line between this place and Syracuse.”
