Obituary: Ambrose B. "Amby" Nangeroni of Milton, a retired vice president of Purity Supreme supermarkets, died Friday at Milton Hospital following a brief illness. He was 74.
Born in Boston, he graduated from Boston English High School in 1938 and from Northeastern University in 1943.
Mr. Nangeroni enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and was discharged as a lieutenant after serving in the Reserve for 20 years.
In 1946, he joined the Supreme Market Group and supervised and designed the construction of the chain's markets and bakeries. He was named executive vice president at Purity Supreme before his retirement in 1983.
Upon retirement, Mr. Nangeroni founded a consulting company for the supermarkets called Nangeroni Associates.
For 25 years, he was a director and member of the investment committee at the Milton Savings Bank.
In 1964, Mr. Nangeroni was named a corporator of Milton Hospital. In 1967, he was elected to the Milton Hospital board of directors, and from 1986 to 1993 he was chairman of that board.
A Town Meeting member for several years, he was also chairman of the Warrant Committee for two years and past chairman of the town Finance Committee.
Mr. Nangeroni was a member of the board of Freedom House Multi Service Center in Roxbury from 1965 to 1990. He was also a member of the Registered Professional Engineers of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Food Distribution Research Society and the Bakery Engineering Society. He was a notary public.
He is survived by his wife, Mary F. (Hunt); three sons, Ambrose E. of Hollis, N.H., Paul R. of Monrovia, Md., and Peter E. of Walpole; five daughters, Marna N. Onorato of Wrentham, Mary N. Granda of Weymouth, Nancy R. of Cambridge, Theresa A. of Tuscon, Ariz., and Ruth Nangeroni-Simpson of Arlington; three sisters, Josephine Varnerin and Marcella Serafini and Eleanor Bossi, all of Milton; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Angela's Church, Mattapan.
Burial will be in Milton Cemetery.
