“Frances C. (Cifrino) Kissell, 80, of Wareham, MA, formerly of Dorchester, MA died Friday, (June 27, 2003) at home. She was the widow of the late Adolph J. "Butch" Kissell and the daughter of the late Frank and Emily (Cataldo) Cifrino. She was born in Boston, MA and lived in Dorchester before moving to Wareham in 1976. Mrs. Kissell was a sergeant and classification specialist in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Mrs. Kissell graduated from Country Day School of Sacred Heart in Newton. In 1943, she graduated first in her class from Radcliffe College and then in 1948 graduated first her class from Boston College Law School. She passed the bar exam that same year and began the practice of law in Boston until 1961. In 1981 she earned a Master's Degree in Education at Bridgewater State College. While in law school, she was assistant to her husband as scout for the NFL Buffalo Bills, and later assistant football coach for the First Naval District. Mrs. Kissell was appointed assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. After five and a half years she moved on to U.S. Small Business Administration as litigation attorney for the New England Region. She was the first female to be appointed to the U.S. Attorney's Office. She had been admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut, U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. She was a member of the Otis Advisory Council, the Harvard and Radcliffe Club of Cape Cod, the American Legion, Onset Protective League, the Coalition to Save Buzzards Bay, and the Golden Gavel Club, Washington, D.C. For six years she was First Vice President and Bulletin Editor for the Friends of Boston City Hospital, served two terms as President of St. Margaret's Hospital Guild and was named Who's Who in American Women in 1958-59 and a founder of the Wareham School Advisory Council. Mrs. Kissell was a campaign coordinator for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Campaign in Eastern Massachusetts. Mrs. Kissell was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Onset. She enjoyed participating in town meetings and local issues, football and basketball games, travelling, boating, entertaining friends and mostly enjoying her family. Her opinions of the state of the world and the changes in the last 50 years would fill volumes and therefore go unsaid. Survivors include her daughter, Emily M. Kissell of Windsor; a brother, Alphonse F. Cifrino of Marshfield, MA; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Bedard of Fall River, MA; two granddaughters, Sarah Beth Pedersen and Heather Kissell. Her son, Steve Kissell of Westport died in 2002. Also survived by two "chosen" daughters, Julie Murphy and Maryann Rosenfeld, dear friends, Kate and Leo LaMontagne and Ray Holmes. Special thanks and love to her caregiver, Holly Hinds and to the staff at the Falmouth Dialysis Center, especially Bill, Ilithia and Nancy; and a host of friends and neighbors. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, in St. Mary's Church, Onset. Burial will be on Wednesday in HolyHood Cemetery, Brookline. Visiting hours are from 4-8 p.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 N. Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02172.”
