Notes for Luigi / Louis Varnerin
Ellis Island - 16 April 1894 - Luigi Varnerin, age 49, going to Boston with Camillo Furlan, age 14. Luigi’s age is clearly written as 49, but to agree with the two later trips he would have to have been about 44.
In 1898 Luigi Varnerin di Davide contributed to reconstucting “la chiesetta della Madonna della Salute” in Tramonti along with Giacomo Varnerin di Davide. The original church was built around 1844 and the reconstucted one was consecrated in 1911.
Luigi Varnerin, shown as age 50, traveled to Boston through Ellis Island on May 14, 1900 and refered to having been in Boston since 1885. Going to join his brother Giacomo at 297 (later numbered 321) Norfolk Avenue.
1904 naturalization says he is living at 890 (error) Norfolk Ave and born 14 February 1850, which differs from his headstone.
Ellis Island - 17 May 1905 - Luigi, age 55, married, a US citizen, and Angelo Varnerin, age 15, arrived on their way to join a friend, Vittorio Galli, at 177 Sullivan Street, New York City. It was Angelo’s first trip to the US, but Luigi said he had been in the US from 1894-1904 and had been naturalized at the Circuit Court, District of Boston on 21 September 1904. It seems likely that Angelo is his son.
When his sister Guiditta came through Ellis Island on 1 April 1915, she said that her closest relative at home in Tramonti was her brother Luigi.
1930 directory shows him living at 321 Norfolk Avenue and working at/owning? the Dorchester Cement Block Co. at 81 East Cottage Street.
