“TOPSHAM — George Hamilton Goodwin, Jr., 86, of Topsham, died March 9, 2011 at Amenity Manor in Topsham. He was born November 30, 1924 in Ware, MA. His parents were George Hamilton Goodwin and Amelia Fanny Goodwin. From 1943-1946, he served in the Army. He attended Syracuse University, earning a B.A. in English and a Master of Library Science degree in 1952.
During his career, he worked as a librarian for the Smithsonian Institution, the State University of New York at New Paltz, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Finally, from 1969 until his retirement in 1985, he served as Library Director of the US Geological Survey in Reston, VA. He was a member of the Society of the History of Natural History and the History of Earth Sciences Society.
Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; a daughter, Susan of Frederick, MD; a daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Tod Brown of Colorado Springs, CO; a brother, Robert of Oriental, NC and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alba Mae White.
He will be buried this summer in Elm Vale Cemetery in Waterford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Smile Train. Condolences may be expressed at FuneralAlternatives.net.”
