In 1944 the Braves owners had a plan for a new professional football league. In January, 1946 the Braves hired a Rugo family friend, Billy Sullivan, as public relations director. In 1959, Billy Sullivan accomplished this goal when he helped found the American Football League and the Boston Patriots.
