“Obituary, Burlington Hawk-Eye Gazette, August 26, 1913:
The death of Mr. Charles E. Schramm is a matter of genuine grief and real concern in this city of his birth and neighboring country. No gentleman stood higher in the esteem and affection of his fellowmen than did Charley Schramm, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him. Of that stalwart stock to which so much of the growth and present day prosperity fo this Mississippi valley are due, Mr. Schramm lived up to its best tradition. He and brothers, through the exercise of a constant industry, a perfect integrity and rare business acumen, splendidly maintained the high reputation and built up the business of the commercial house founded by their father, the late J. S. Schramm, in pioneer days. Honesty has ever been the policy of this honorable house, not because it was the best policy but because it was the only one that its heads could comprehend. From a youth Mr. Charles Schramm had been connected with the store and for the past quarter of a century he was active in its management. A deal of the concern's steady success is due to his wise foresight, his hard work and great good common sense.
But it is not so much as prominent merchant that the will be remembered, not so much as a potent factor in the prosperity of this community, but as a whole-souled Christian gentleman, the embodiment of honor, real courtesy personified. The Gazette knows none who stood higher in the love and respect of his people than Mr. Schramm. Possessed of a cheerful, happy disposition, charitable to the extreme, truly interested in the welfare of his friends and neighbors, the life of all social gatherings, generous to a fault, absolutely without thought of self, an affectionate husband, a loving father and loyal brother, death has taken from us all a most lovable character.
The remains of the late Charles E. Schramm will be born to the grave tomorrow morning following services at the First Presbyterian church where the Rev. Archibald Cardie will officiate. Friends are invited to attend the services but interment in Aspen Grove cemetery will be private.
Charles E. Schramm had spent his entire life in Burlington and his duties were such as to bring him into contact with scores of people everyday. He was gifted with a strong personality and kindly nature which caused all who came into his presence to depart with a high regard for him and it was through these gifts that he had created a wide circle of friends both in Burlington and elsewhere, and his death has caused geniune regret and sorrow to them. “
