1880 Census - Burlington, Iowa. dry goods merchant, living with wife, 7 children ages 5 - 25, and 2 servant girls from Prussia.

In 1880s store relocated to 216-222 Jefferson Street. Still there at time of 100th anniversary (1945?) and still run by 3rd generation of family.

Brother Charles worked in business from 1850s to just before Civil War when he set up Schramm and Schmieg with his brother-in-law.

Founder of German-American Bank, later National Bank of Burlngton.

Original journal of voyage from Germany to US given to Special Collections section of University of Iowa Library.

“ Schramm, Johann Sigmund - born 31 Mar 1818 in Plech, Bavaria; son of Johann Christopher (died 1849) and Margareth Barbara (Kressling) Schramm; immigrated Sep 1837; married 1) 15 Mar 1843 Harriet Morgan (died 1850), dau of Jonathan Morgan; 1 child by 1st marriage; married 2) 24 Mar 1852 Amelia P. Williams, dau of Silas Williams; children: Henry, Frank, Herbert, Charles, Walter, Ralph, Mrs. T.G. Foster, Mrs. Edwin Doane of Chicago, Miss Jessie; 4 siblings: Chas. F. Johann Siegmund Schramm
Born March 31st, 1818 in Plech as fifth of ten children.
1837 Emigration to America with his family
Places of residence: from 1837 in Circleville (Ohio), from 1841 in Burlington (Iowa)
Worked as a printer for an ecclasiastical paper („Religious Telescope”) in Circleville, later for a local paper in Burlington
Ca. 1845 (date of first advertisement) foundation of a retail store (J. S. Schramm Company) in Burlington.
First marriage March 13th, 1843 with Harriet Morgan († 1850 cholera-epidemic),
Second marriage March 24th, 1852 with Amelia Persis Williams,
Two children from the first, eight children from the second marriage.
Died February 17th, 1898 in St. Louis.
