RUGO FLORIANO nato nel 1888 a TRAMONTI DI SOTTO da GIOVANNI BATTISTA e VARNERIN LUCIA

Julia Rugo Blevins “I noticed that my father's name appears as Alvise Florius in that wedding picture; the only name I knew was Alvise Floriano.  He was called 'Moro' because he was the only one in the family with brown eyes and a deeper complexion.  The reference, of course was to the Moors.”

26 April 1910 census seems to show him, age 21, living at 326 Norfolk Avenue. His sister Maddelena Marmai and family are at 328 Norfolk.

Marriage record calls him “Alviso.” says he lives at 173 Magnolia Street and is a bricklayer.

Alviso Floriano Rugo admitted to citizenship 15 March 1918, living at 32 Norfolk Avenue (probably 321 Norfolk).

Middle name of “Florius” found on World War I draft registration card report, actual card image appears to say “Florino” at the top but then the signature at the bottom looks like Floriano. Draft record says that he is a bricklayer, working for John Varnerin, and also living at 321 Norfolk Avenue.

1920 Census: Family living at 321 Norfolk Ave., renting from her parents. He is 31 and she 27. He came to US in 1906 and was naturalized in 1916. (WW I draft registration, June 1917, says he is not yet naturalized.) He is a bricklayer.

Returned from Italy 8 April 1927, living at 321 Norfolk Ave., says he was naturalized 15 March 1919.

1930 Census: Family with 6 children (Robert not yet born?) renting at 321 Norfolk Avenue. Her parents, John & Santa Varnerin, listed as owners, also living there with 3 sons and a daughter-in-law. Alvise listed as brick layer. Says he immigrated to US in 1906.

1940 Census has the family at 321 Norfolk Avenue. The other apartments are occupied by the Peter Varnerin family and the Leonard Mimiutti family.

His World War II draft registration shows him at 321 Norfolk Ave. and working for the Rugo Construction Co. located at 80 Boylston Street, Boston.

Worked on construction of the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania Arsenal at start of World War II. His son Alfred joined him there for a while before going into the service.

The family moved to Fernald Terrace, Dorchester, Massachusetts after Alfred returned from World War II. The original building permits for the two family homes on Fernald Terrace were taken out in 1924 by Orlando of East Boston, but after 1926 seven of the properties are in the names of Varnerin, Rugo and Serafini. Alfred said that his father owned two houses and half of another there as investment properties before he was persuaded to move into the best of them.

1948 directory shows them at 11 Fernald Terrace.
