Notes for Werther Arcelli
A boxing website says that he was born in Milan, Italy and that “Arcelli arrived on the Roma with the Italian National Boxing Team on January 27, 1930, to compete in an International Tournament against the United States and Germany in Boston (Feb 3), New York (Feb 10), and Grand Rapids (Feb 17). He was scheduled to return to Italy on Feb 22nd. But circumstances allowed Arcelli and Oddone Piazza to remain in Boston where they turned professional. Arcelli was a world ranked welterweight from March 1934 to February 1935; his highest ranking was at #4. He won the New England Welterweight Title from Andy Callahan on January 19,1934. He later became a US citizen and settled in Dorchester, MA.”

Passenger manifest shows that Peter and Maria Varnerin were on the same ship as Arcelli and Piazza in January 1930. His birthplace is shown as San Felice sul Panaro which is far southeast of Milano, although it also says that his mother is living in Milano on Via Canonica.

1930 Census does not have him in Index, but he appears as a lodger at 299? Norfolk Ave., Dorchester in apartment of John & Louisa Camillo(?) and daughter Mary. He is 21 and arrived in US from Italy in 1930 and is a boxer.

They operated a corner store at East Cottage and Humphreys Streets, at the end of Norfolk Avenue, Dorchester.

Naturalized 3 October 1938, living at 54 Fuller Street, Dorchester.
