Notes for Maddalena Rugo
She may be the “Magdalena” Rugo who arrived at Ellis Island on 3 June 1899, age 22, unmarried, traveling with the Giuseppe Rugo age 29 who lived in Concord, New Hampshire, and with Giovanni Ferroli age 21 who was going to Boston. Says that she was joining her uncle??
Marriage certificate spells her name “Maddalena”, Vol 491, Page 157. As does her headstone.
Age 23 at time of marriage. Witnesses at their wedding were Santa Bidoli Ferroli and Pietro Moruzzi (Pietro Moruzzi age 24 had passed through Ellis Island in May 1896, traveling to Boston).
Husband and wife both listed as living at 297 (street number later changed to “321” ca. 1904-1908) Norfolk Ave. at time of marriage (1899); 9 Franklin Court, off Norfolk Ave., in 1901 when child was born and 7 Piotti Place in 1905 when child died. 1920 Census and her husband’s World War I draft registration card has her living at 328 Norfolk Avenue.
At 335 Norfolk Avenue when her husband died in 1925.
Mention of photos in Venice 25 September,1927 with Emilia Rugo (Tirinnanzi)
22 December 1927, she returned from Italy, age 52, a widow. This may have been a return from the trip when Emilia Rugo went to get married?
1930 Census has her as head of household and owner of 335 Norfolk Avenue. Age when married was 23. Age at last birthday was 54. Came to USA 1898.
At 335 Norfolk Avenue in July 1938 when son-in-law died.
1940 Census shows her as a widow living at 335 Norfolk Avenue with her grandsons Peter, age 16, and Joseph, age 14. The grandchildren are actually Rugo; their mother Mary died in 1926 and their father Pietro Rugo in 1938.
Paul Marmai’s World War II draft registration card identifies her as the person who would always know where he was and gives 335 Norfolk Avenue as her address.
