Notes for Marianne Schwartz
Would this be the Marianne Schapira who sailed on the Queen Mary from Cherbourg in September 1937, age 48, married, a Roumanian citizen from Bucharest, but born in Warasdin, Yugoslavia? She also sailed to New York from Lisbon, Portugal in June 1941 giving the same citizenship and birth place and saying that London was her last place of residence. Warasdin seems to have been an old name for Varazdin, a principal city on the Drava River on the northern border of present day Croatia, near Serbia, Austria and Hungary.
From New York Times obituary of her daughter Ileana: “Viennese mother, Marianne, who years later divorced her father and married the Russian-born American artist John Graham.”
New York Times: “His (John Graham’s) greatest love may have been Marianne Strate-Felber (how does this relate to Shapira or Schwartz?), Ileana Sonnabend's mother. They met in 1943 and lived in Strate-Felber's brownstone at 4 East 77th Street, in the apartment that eventually became the gallery of her son-in-law, Leo Castelli.
1946 directory shows Marianne and Michael Shapira living at 4 E. 77th Street, New York City - Butterfield 8-7135. He is not listed in 1948; had he died by then?
