He served as a cavalry officer in the czar’s army during World War One, escaped to Poland, and later France, when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, and arrived in New York in 1920, where he anglicized his name. He trained at the Art Students League of New York, where he briefly assisted Ashcan School painter John F. Sloan. In 1925 he relocated to Baltimore with his third wife artist Elinor Gibson.”

A 12-year relationship, beginning in 1943, with Marianne Strate-Felber, the mother of the noted art dealer Ileana Sonnabend and thus the mother-in-law of the even more influential dealer Leo Castelli, left him with a trust fund and a house in Southampton. Graham was highly distressed by Marianne's death in 1955, but managed to recover, romancing Picasso's lover, Francoise Gilot, and engaging in a series of affairs with very young women, including the 22-year-old Isabelle Colin du Fresne, who was to become the Warhol superstar Ultraviolet.”
