Joseph A. ``Bim'' Marmai of Marshfield, owner and retired French and Italian pastry chef of Cafe Roma in the North End, died Thursday at the home of his daughter. He was 78.

Mr. Marmai was born in Boston and graduated from Dorchester High School. He lived in Marshfield as a permanent resident since 1957. He had been a summer resident since 1945.

Mr. Marmai and his late wife, Ann, ran Cafe Roma from 1961 to 1987, when they retired. Mr. Marmai's Italian pastries were served at many weddings, functions, and Sons of Italy banquets over the years.

Mr. Marmai was a member of the Sons of Italy in America and was a delegate to the state and national conventions. He was past president of the Ann Marmai Sons of Italy Lodge in Marshfield and was the lodge's orator for many years.

Mr. Marmai leaves a son, Joseph E. of Hanover; a daughter, M. Sugar Young of Marshfield; a sister, Julia Argelli of Magnolia, Texas; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A funeral Mass will be said Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's by the Sea Church in Marshfield. Burial will be in Winslow Cemetery in Marshfield.
